Why it matters

Farming is an essential livelihood — and a business that deserves professional support.

Many small-scale farmers work hard with limited access to new knowledge, reliable buyers or clear market information.

The Nature Nest Farmer Empowerment Initiative is a proposed community development programme. Its aim is to help farmers in and around Nedunkulam and the wider Vavuniya District learn practical, locally appropriate methods, strengthen their farm businesses and reach better markets.

It is planned, not yet operating. Training will be developed and delivered with appropriately qualified agricultural professionals.

A · Integrated farming education

What is integrated farming?

Integrated farming brings different agricultural activities together so that resources, knowledge and by-products can be used more efficiently. Our vision is to help local farmers explore practical, locally appropriate methods that improve productivity while caring for the land.

In practice, that might mean animal manure feeding the compost heap, compost feeding the vegetable beds, crop residues feeding the animals, and a pond storing water for the dry months. You can see how we plan to do this on our own farm on The Farm page.

Topics we intend to cover

Soil & water

  • Sustainable soil management
  • Composting and organic matter recycling
  • Efficient water use
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Drip irrigation

Crops & livestock

  • Integrated crop and livestock farming
  • Crop diversification
  • Crop planning and seasonal production
  • Responsible livestock management
  • Poultry and aquaculture integration

Nature Nest intends to explore a range of practical learning formats.

Our working farm should eventually function as a practical learning environment, subject to programme development and operational capacity.
